Winamp aims for a comeback with new music player powered by Deezer

The legendary media player Winamp, which defined the digital music era in the late 1990s and early 2000s, has announced a major transformation. The developers presented a new version of the application built on a strategic partnership with the international music streaming service Deezer. This move aims to combine the classic interface with modern cloud audio delivery technologies, granting users access to millions of tracks directly from their familiar desktop environment.

The Winamp project spent a long time in uncertainty following multiple owner changes and attempt reboot cycles. However, the new leadership at Llama Group decided to change the development strategy. Instead of building another closed ecosystem or a generic web directory, the team focused on integrating with existing streaming infrastructure while preserving the product’s key identity - flexibility, customization, and local media library management.

The core engine behind Winamp’s new evolution will be the Deezer API. This integration allows users to log in with their Deezer account directly inside the player to access their personal playlists, favorite albums, and Flow recommendation algorithms. At the same time, the application retains full support for playing local audio files in MP3, FLAC, WAV, and AAC formats, merging local and cloud libraries into a unified management system.

From a technical standpoint, the player has been rewritten on a modern cross-platform framework. This significantly reduced RAM consumption and CPU load compared to previous web-based reboot attempts. The engineering team paid special attention to audio decoding and support for lossless streaming.

Customization and visualization preserving retro aesthetics

One of the most important aspects of original Winamp was its extensive UI customization through skins (WSZ files). Developers confirmed that the new player features a legacy compatibility mode, allowing users to load classic skins. Users can seamlessly toggle between a modern Glassmorphism layout and the traditional Winamp 2.x interface.

The visualization module has also received a major overhaul. The legendary MilkDrop engine was ported to modern graphics APIs (DirectX 12 and Vulkan), enabling high-detail visual rendering at 4K resolution and 120 frames per second. This maintains the signature retro feel while scaling cleanly on modern high-DPI displays.

Monetization model and availability

Accessing Deezer streaming through Winamp will be available for free ad-supported users as well as Deezer Premium and HiFi subscribers. Paid tier subscribers can stream high-resolution audio in FLAC format at 16-bit / 44.1 kHz with bitrates up to 1411 kbps.
