Gamers around the world are eagerly awaiting the release of Grand Theft Auto VI by Rockstar Games. The official trailer released by the company blew up the internet and set several world records for views on YouTube. However, the developers clearly stated that the game will initially be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles in 2025. A version for PC has not even been officially announced.
Despite this well-known information, many players continue to look for any opportunity to try the game early. Cybercriminals are actively exploiting this by creating fake websites and offers to download “early access” or an “exclusive GTA 6 demo” for personal computers. Instead of the long-awaited game, users receive dangerous malicious software.
The Scam Mechanics: How the Trap Works
The deception scheme is quite simple but effective. Cybercriminals create websites that visually copy the style of the official Rockstar Games website or popular gaming publications. These resources feature bright banners with frames from the official trailer and large “Download GTA 6 Demo” buttons. The user is offered to download a small installation file, often disguised as an official launcher or an archive with the game.
To increase trust, scammers may use fake reviews and comments in which “lucky people” supposedly already play the game. Sometimes such websites even place fake download counters to create an effect of urgency and popularity of the file. However, after downloading and running this file, no game is installed.
The Threat Posed by the Fake GTA 6 Demo
Instead of the legendary game, malicious software gets onto the victim’s computer. Cybersecurity researchers have recorded the spread of various types of viruses under the guise of GTA 6 on PC.
Vidar Trojan: A Hunter for Your Data
The most common threat identified in such fake installers is the Vidar family trojan. This is so-called “infostealer” – a program designed to steal confidential information from an infected computer. The Vidar malicious file usually has a very small size – about 1.1 MB, which allows it to download quickly and go unnoticed by some anti-viruses.
Vidar is capable of stealing:
- Saved passwords from browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Edge and others);
- Cookie files and active browser sessions, which allows cybercriminals to bypass two-factor authentication;
- Data from crypto wallets and bank cards;
- Information from messengers (Telegram, Discord);
- Files with certain extensions (.txt, .docx, .pdf) from the desktop and other folders.
All stolen information is sent to the cybercriminals’ command and control server. The obtained data can be used to access bank accounts, sold on the black market or for further phishing attacks.
Threats of Ransomware Viruses
Besides infostealers, ransomware viruses can also be spread under the guise of the GTA 6 demo. After starting, such a virus encrypts all files on the computer and demands a ransom in cryptocurrency for the decryption key. The ransom size can reach hundreds or thousands of US dollars (USD), and there is no guarantee that after payment you will get your files back.
Other Types of Malicious Software
Among other threats recorded in fake GTA 6 files are:
- Cryptocurrency miners: use your PC’s resources (CPU and GPU) to mine cryptocurrency for cybercriminals;
- Adware: displays intrusive ads and changes browser settings;
- Botnets: adds your computer to a network of infected devices used for DDoS attacks or spamming.
How to Protect Your PC and Personal Data
To avoid becoming a victim of cybercriminals exploiting the hype around GTA 6, follow simple security rules:
- Trust only official sources: the only reliable source of information about GTA 6 is the official Rockstar Games website, their social networks and verified gaming publications. No official game demos exist or are planned.
- Do not download files from suspicious sites: avoid downloading games, patches, launchers or any files related to GTA 6 on PC from unofficial resources.
- Use licensed software: purchase and download games only through official digital stores (Steam, Epic Games Store, Rockstar Games Launcher and others).
- Use reliable anti-virus: install and regularly update quality anti-virus software capable of detecting and blocking modern threats such as trojans and ransomware.
