Unlocking the Full 15GB Limit
The new regulations introduce a two-tier resource access system. Upon registration, a user receives a minimum package of 5GB, shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. To unlock the standard 15GB, the system requires linking and verifying an active phone number. This step allows the company to identify real users and reduce server load from inactive or bot-generated profiles.
Economic and Technical Factors
Analysts note that maintaining vast amounts of data is becoming increasingly expensive due to rising energy costs and data center maintenance. While 5GB may seem critically low for 2026, especially considering the size of modern high-quality photos and videos, Google is encouraging a transition to paid Google One plans. Users who rely on the ecosystem for work will likely face storage shortages within the first few months.
Impact on Email Services and Synchronization
This limitation directly affects Gmail. Since free space is shared across all services, reaching the 5GB limit will stop the delivery of new emails. This creates additional hurdles for those using the cloud as a primary document archive. Google recommends regular trash cleanup and deleting large attachments to stay within the limit without a subscription.
