Return to Arrakis after twenty years
Director Denis Villeneuve presented the first official look at the final part of his sci-fi trilogy. The film Dune Part Three is based on Frank Herbert’s novel Dune Messiah. The plot moves 20 years forward after the events of the previous film. Paul Atreides now occupies the Imperial throne but his rule is accompanied by a massive crisis and religious fanaticism that consumes the known universe.
In the presented footage the emphasis is shifted from large scale battles to intricate political intrigues. The main character faces the consequences of his decisions while his former allies begin to doubt the legitimacy of the new leader’s actions. The trailer demonstrates a somber atmosphere where every decision of the ruler is analyzed by his opponents.
Political alliances and new threats to the throne
Central to the plot is a web of political intrigues and secret alliances aimed at overthrowing the Atreides rule. The main forces of the galaxy unite to weaken the influence of the Imperial house. Among the key figures of the confrontation are representatives of the Bene Gesserit Order the Spacing Guild and the Bene Tleilax. The latter are preparing a special tool of manipulation designed to strike at the psychological state of the ruler.
An important storyline is the return of Duncan Idaho played by Jason Momoa. However this is not a standard resurrection but the appearance of a ghola - a genetic clone created by the Tleilaxu masters with a specific purpose. This character becomes both a reminder of the past and a serious threat to palace security.
Character evolution and Villeneuve’s visual style
The trailer shows detailed changes in the relationship between Paul Atreides and Chani. Zendaya’s character now acts as the leader of an opposition wing of Fremen who are dissatisfied with the transformation of their culture into a galaxy wide religion. The dialogues between the main characters emphasize deep regret for the lost past and the inability to return to the times when they were simple desert dwellers.
The visual component of the film has changed. Together with cinematographer Greig Fraser Villeneuve created a contrast between the bright spaces of Arrakis and the cold monumental halls of the Emperor’s palace. Hans Zimmer’s musical score has become more unsettling and industrial emphasizing the inevitability of the tragic finale of this story.
